honoured to be opening new Dementia bays at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital July 25th

Hi

I would like to thank Louisa Daly, Head of Patient Experience and Involvement,all the team Ashford & St Peters Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for inviting me back to the hospital to take part in the opening. of the new dementia bays at St Peter’s Hospital on Monday 25^th July 12.30-2.00pm.

i have had the great honour to speak at the hospital before You can read about our previous visit here.

The dementia bays are situated within the care of the Elderly wards and the objective of the project is to “Enhance the Healing Environment”. The environment has been adapted, taking guidance from current research, through using colours and minor alterations to create a calm, therapeutic environment for people with dementia and their loved ones.

ALLIANCE Neurological Programme

Launch of Neurological Programme at the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland This new programme, funded by the Scottish Government aims to strengthen the voice of the neurological community and build capacity of the third sector to contribute to the development and implementation of policy and practice.  With the integration of health and social care it is important that programme activities work across sectors to highlight issues and ensure people are listened to at individual, local and national levels.  To develop and realise this programme the ALLIANCE will work in partnership with people living with neurological conditions, their carers and families and the organisations and staff that support them. Do you live with a neurological condition or care for someone who does?  Does your organisation support people who are living with neurological conditions?  There are several ways to get involved: ·         Attend one of our stakeholder or network events (see below) ·         Subscribe to our ebulletin ·         Email gillian.fergusson@alliance-scotland for more information and to share your views Programme aims The Neurological Programme aims to: ·         Develop a strong neurological community across the ALLIANCE membership and programmes ·         Increase the impact of the voice of people living with neurological conditions ·         Engage with Health and Social Care Partnerships ·         Support implementation of the National Clinical Strategy  Events Our Stakeholder event is aimed at organisations who support people living with neurological conditions and their carers.  The event will present an opportunity to meet others working in the sector, to hear about the programme and to contribute comments and ideas on the priorities for neurological conditions.. Please join us on the 28th July 10am – 12pm at the ALLIANCE offices.   The Involvement Network event is looking for people with lived experience of neurological conditions to come forward and share their views and experience to help influence policy and practice. speaking Aspiring Chief Executive program delivered by the NHS Leadership Academy July 26th

With great thanks to Lisa Oldfield, Programme Coordinator for the NHS Leadership Academy, and Chris Lake, Head of Professional Development, for inviting me back speak at the next cohort of the asprirng NHS Chief Executives programme

I had the great honour to speak last year at the first event and to meet the people who have signed up on the course .You can read more about that day from the post from our DCV blog below 

I am so honoured to be invited back to meet the new delegates attending this inspiring course 

Tommy was asked to facilitate a workshop on Making a Difference at the Aspiring Chief Executive program delivered by the NHS Leadership Academy on the 16^th December in Leeds.

We’d like to thank Lisa Oldfield, Programme Coordinator for the NHS Leadership Academy, and Chris Lake, Head of Professional Development, for inviting Tommy to speak. As a team we were really honoured to open this new programme aimed at the next generation of NHS Chief Executives.

It was an honour to speak at the event and read all the pledges from the day.

To make sure that I listen to the voice of carers and patients before I make decisions-and that I involve them in helping to make and drive improvements.

I pledge to always ensure that all conversations that I am involved in about a patient, refer to them by their name and not “Bed 24” or “The lady with pneumonia” –Richard Jenhins

Continue to champion and support our acute trust dementia programme at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust-Dr Andrew Catto

To stop, listen, hear before I try and intervene or make a suggestion that might not be right for the person I am trying to help-Josie

I pledge to listen to carers and their families so I can help in any I can to make a difference in their lives-Hughie Mills

To make a positive difference at least once per day for the people I work for and with and mainly the patients I care for-Denyse Ghisayawan

To make sure that anyone who asks for my help will get the right help they need either by myself or someone who maybe in a better position to fulfil it.

Applications for Carers Parliament now live!

One of the Scottish Government’s key manifesto commitments was to establish a Carers Parliament. This is a forum providing carers, young carers, and carer representatives from across Scotland an opportunity to discuss and debate matters important to them.

The Scottish Government has commissioned Carers Scotland, on behalf of National Carer Organisations, to organise and manage the Carers Parliament. A Steering Group involving key stakeholders has also been established to oversee the development, management, and evaluation of each Carers Parliament.

The fifth Carers Parliament will be held on 2 November 2016. The event will be held at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

Scottish Ministers, MSPs, and other decision makers will be able to hear directly from carers, to hear of their knowledge and experiences, and participate in debates and discussions.

There will be two delegates from each of the 73 Scottish Parliamentary constituencies.

If you complete this form you will be entered into the ballot for places.

The ballot, conducted by carers on the Steering Group, will be held in late July with successful delegates informed in early August.

The most recent Carers Parliament took place on October 6, 2015 at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh.  The 5th event takes place on November 2, 2016 at Edinburgh Conference Centre, Heriot Watt University.

Honoured to attend The Opening of the Fifth Session of the Scottish Parliament

With great thanks  to Humza Yousaf MSP who kindly nominated  me for a Local Hero Award which involved attending the opening of the Fifth Session of the Scottish Parliament

The project would also like to give a massive thanks to Humza for nominating Tommy for his work. As part of the day, Tommy got to see Her Majesty The Queen when she departed the Scottish Parliament following Her Address to Members of the Scottish Parliament, before then joining  other guests as part of the Riding.

The Riding – is an historic procession that makes its way down the Royal Mile to the Parliament.  The Riding was a vibrant spectacle that brings together musicians and dancers along with Members and their guests, Local Heroes and representatives from a wide range of organisations from right across Scotland. It was an exciting opportunity to take part in such a historic event and celebrate the work we have done over the last 3 years.

Speaking about the day, Project Engagement Lead Tommy Whitelaw said ‘I was so very honoured  to attend such a wonderful and inspiring day, and was very hounred that my great friend and colleague Gavin Patterson came along to support. There where so many inspiring people and stories to be heard including our friend Marri Welsh from Food Train Scotland North Ayrshire who was nominated for the great work that she does across communities.’
